            EXT. TOWN STREET - NIGHT

The outskirts of town, where houses are few and street lights
are fewer. Darkness lurks in every corner.

The reasonably well off live here in their big houses that look
impressive, but which on closer inspection reflect their
            occupants less than perfect lives.

A car, dark and anonymous, pulls up opposite one of the shadier
            houses.

THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT: goes out as the engine dies.

The whine of the passenger window being wound down.

A HAND: exits the window holding a lit cigarette.

Ash flicks from the cigarette landing on the road.

THE HAND: disappears back inside the car.

            INT. CRAIG'S CAR - NIGHT

THE CIGARETTE SMOKER'S MOUTH: as he takes another drag.

                                CRAIG (O.S.)
Close the window, it's fucking freezing.

Reveal CRAIG, the driver, and MAX, the smoker.

Both are in their late twenties and have the cold look of
problem solvers; other people's problems that is.

                                MAX
I though you hated the smoke?

                                CRAIG
                      I do!

                                MAX
And you still want me to close the window?

                                CRAIG
Smoke is slightly less annoying than
                      freezing your bollocks off.

Max winds the window up as he takes another drag on the
            cigarette.

He breaths out and fills the car with smoke.

            Craig coughs, choking.

                                MAX
I can open that window again, if you want?

                                CRAIG
                      No!

            Max finishes the cigarette.

He opens the car door and deposits the butt on the road, closing
            the door again.

            Craig looks at his watch.

                                CRAIG (cont'd)
                      He's late.

                                MAX
Well let's go and do it ourselves then?

                                CRAIG
                      We,re a team.

                                MAX
                      Not for much longer.

                                CRAIG
                      Tonight we are.

                                MAX
                      I don't know why you're still defending
                      him.

                                CRAIG
                      I'm not defending him.

                                MAX
                      Sounds like it to me.

                                CRAIG
                      I'm not defending him.

                                MAX
                      If you say so.

                                CRAIG
                      I don't like it either, but there's not a
                      lot we can do about.

                                MAX
We could talk him out of it?

                                CRAIG
Since when has he ever listened to either
                      of us?

                                MAX
I'm just saying we should have tried,
                      that's all.

                                CRAIG
Then you talk to him about it later.

                                MAX
                      I will.

            Silence.

Max looks at his watch. Time is getting on.

He fishes inside his jacket for his cigarettes.

                                CRAIG
You're not going to have another one
                      already?

            Max lights up.

                                MAX
                      Guess so.

            Craig coughs.

                                CRAIG
You're going to kill yourself... and me
                      most likely.

                                MAX
It relaxes me. You can still have the
                      window wound down?

            No answer.

                                MAX (cont'd)
                      Suit yourself.

Max looks at his watch again.

                                MAX (cont'd)
                      It's getting late.

                                CRAIG
                      I said we wait.

                                MAX
                      How much longer?

                                CRAIG
                      Until I say so.
                          (beat)
You did tell him we'd meet him here?

                                MAX
                      Yes.

                                CRAIG
And you told him the correct time?

                                MAX
                      Yes.

Max exhales a large cloud of smoke. Craig chokes.

                                CRAIG
Fuck him, lets do it. You grab the bin
liner and I'll get the knife.

Craig exits. Max smiles to himself.

EXT. HOUSE, FRONT DOOR - NIGHT

A solitary light illuminates the front door.

            Craig and Max approach.

Max carries a large black bin liner, Craig an evil looking
            knife.

            They stop by the door.

                                MAX
                          (whispering)
Why do you think he wants to leave?

                                CRAIG
                          (whispering)
                      He's getting married.

                                MAX
I know that, but it's no excuse to jack
                      your job in.

                                CRAIG
                          (whispering)
                      Shhhh! Get the light.

Max uses a cloth to unscrew the light bulb and then throws the
            bulb into the hedge.

Craig goes to knock, but the door is opened before he can.

A Man backs out the door, pulling it shut behind him.

            Craig slits the Man's throat.

Max puts the bin liner over his head and rolls it down his body,
like he's done it a hundred times before.

Max catches the Body on his shoulder as it falls.

                                MAX
I just don't get why he has to quit.

            EXT. TOWN STREET - NIGHT

Max puts the body in the boot and closes it. He rejoins Craig
            in the car.

            INT. CRAIG'S CAR - NIGHT

They drive along, Max smoking again.

                                MAX
I bet the boss isn't happy.

                                CRAIG
Actually he gave him his blessing.

                                MAX
So he's not worried about the team breaking
                      up then?

                                CRAIG
                      No.

                                MAX
Would you quit if you were getting married?

                                CRAIG
                      No.

                                MAX
Then why does he want to?

                                CRAIG
Will you stop obsessing over it.

                                MAX
                      Doesn't it bother you?

                                CRAIG
Yes it does, but I don't go on about it.

            Beat.

                                MAX
                      Ten years.

                                CRAIG
                      What about it?

                                MAX
You would think it would mean something.

                                CRAIG
Look he's getting married and he just wants
a normal life. Can't you be happy for him?

                                MAX
                          (begrudgingly)
                      I suppose.
                          (beat)
                      I wonder what she's like?

                                CRAIG
                      Plain.

                                MAX
                      Plain? You've met her?

                                CRAIG
A couple of weeks ago at his place.

                                MAX
You mean he invited you around?

                                CRAIG
                      Yep.

                                MAX
                      He didn't invite me!

                                CRAIG
                      I wonder why.

                                MAX
                      What's that supposed to mean?

                                CRAIG
You tried to shag his last girlfriend.

                                MAX
He's still not sore about that is he?

                                CRAIG
                      And her mum too.

                                MAX
                      She kept flirting with me.

                                CRAIG
                          (sarcastic)
                      Ah, that's OK then.

            EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

The car comes to a halt.

Craig and Max exit and open the boot.

Craig removes a shovel, Max the body.

Max dumps the body on the ground.

                                MAX
                      Who's turn is it?

                                CRAIG
                      Yours.

                                MAX
Are you sure, I thought I did it last time?

                                CRAIG
                      Very sure.

Max removes his jacket and places it on the bonnet of the car.

Craig hands him the shovel and Max starts to dig.

                                MAX
So what are we going to do now?

                                CRAIG
                      What do you mean?

                                MAX
                      When he retires?

                                CRAIG
                      Carry on.

                                MAX
                      How?

                                CRAIG
What do you mean by how?

                                MAX
                      He did all the planning.

                                CRAIG
                      So?

                                MAX
Who's going to do the planning from now on?

                                CRAIG
                      I will.

                                MAX
                      You?

                                CRAIG
                      Can't be that hard.

                                MAX
What if we look for someone else to join
                      us?

                                CRAIG
                          (sarcastic)
Great idea, we'll advertise in the local
                      paper.

                                MAX
                      There's no need for that.

                                CRAIG
Professional killer wanted. I can see an
advert like that attracting a lot of
                      interest.

                                MAX
OK, it was a bad idea.

                                CRAIG
                      Stupid even.

                                MAX
                      Shut up.

Max continues to dig in silence.

            EXT. WOODS - LATER

The hole is a lot bigger now. Max is waist deep.

Craig exits the car and wanders over to have a look.

                                CRAIG
                      Looks about ready to me.

            Max continues to dig.

                                CRAIG (cont'd)
                      Deep enough, don't you think?

A shovel of dirt hits Craig's trousers and covers his shoes.

                                CRAIG (cont'd)
                      You're really childish sometimes.

                                MAX
                      Apologise.

                                CRAIG
                      Sod off.

Another load of dirt hits Craig's trousers. Craig shakes the
            dirt from his shoes.

                                CRAIG (cont'd)
OK, I'm sorry I called you stupid.

                                MAX
                      I think that's deep enough.

Max throws the shovel out to one side.

The shovel hits the body in the head, tearing away the bin
            liner.

Max hauls himself out of the hole and brushes himself down.

He walks over to his jacket and recovers a cigarette. He lights
            it.

                                CRAIG
Put the body in it then.

                                MAX
                      When I've finished this.
                          (beat)
He is good at it though.

                                CRAIG
                      Good at what?

                                MAX
                      Planning.

                                CRAIG
                      Yes, he is.

                                MAX
                      An artist.

                                CRAIG
Everything planned down to the last detail.

                                MAX
The choreography of business he calls it.

                                CRAIG
He has a way with words.

                                MAX
                      Bloody poof.

                                CRAIG
                      We'll miss him.

Craig walks over to the body and gives it a little kick.

The bin liner comes away from the body's face. Craig stares at
            it.

                                CRAIG (cont'd)
                      Max?

                                MAX
                      Yup.

                                CRAIG
Where exactly did you say we'd meet him?

                                MAX
                      At the address.

                                CRAIG
                      Where exactly at the address?

                                MAX
                      At the address, why?

Max walks over to Craig and looks down at the body's face.

                                MAX (cont'd)
                      Oh!

                                CRAIG
                      You wanker!

                                                                  FADE OUT.
